World's Largest Treadmill

Summary:
A new jumbo treadmill has been created by the Oxford Fitness in Chile. It can hold up to 10 runners at a time. Opinion:

I think this jumbo treadmill is very cool. I would want to run on it but not for more that 24 hours because my legs will hurt.

Space Probe Runs Out Of Battery

Summary:
Remember the probe that landed on a distant comet recently? Well it has run out of battery power.
The Philae lander sent data back to earth but it run out of battery power and went to standby mode. It lost power because of the lack of light. It is pressed up against a cliff covered in shadows so it can not get enough light on it’s solar panels to recharge.  Researchers hope that the probe can recharge soon and continue it’s work on the comet.

Opinion:

I think that this must be frustrating for the researchers and I also hope that it can continue with its work. It would be cool if the probe recharges and sent more data back to earth.

I really enjoyed watching all of the movies but this one was my favourite because it was talking about bullying and encouraging people to stand up for themselves. I really liked her poem and I think it was very well written.

A Spooky Shattering

Summary:
The people working at the Barnsley Auction Centre in South Yorkshire believed there was a break-in after they found shattered glass on the floor. When the owner, Danny Parker went to see the CCTV footage he was shocked to find something a bit scarier than a break-in. The footage showed the cabinet door opening and shattering without any explanation!

Opinion:
I think this is cool and scary at the same time. Seeing it in the video was cool but it would be scary to see it in real life.

Asteroid To Pass Close To New Zealand

NASA experts have announced that a newly discovered asteroid  flew past earth early today. The asteroid flew directly past New Zealand at 6am. It was not visible to the naked eye but you could see it through a telescope.

I think this cool and I just wish I was up at 6am to see it. It is sad that it is not visible to my eyes because I do not have a telescope to see it with.

My Heart Pendant

Pendent.jpg

This is a picture of my pendant that I made with Mr Grundy at hard materials tech, at Tamaki College. The metal we used was pewter because it stays shiny and doesn't rust like some other metals do. My pendant is a heart and it is for my mum.

Mobile Phones Allowed On Aeroplanes

From today onwards Qantas and Virgin airlines are allowing passengers to use their mobile phones and other mobile devices on the planes. At this stage we do not know if Air New Zealand planes will do the same thing.

I think this is a good idea because I would be able to use my phone on the plane. I can not wait until the Air New Zealand planes announce that they are going to doing the same thing.

Bee Numbers Dropping

In the UK over the past 80 years the number of bees have dropped and scientists have said that is it the cause of the environment changing.

I think it is not good that 2 species of bees have become extinct because the bees are a big part of our environment. It would be sad if all of the bees became extinct.

Monkey Selfie Causes Uproar

A monkey selfie has caused a confusion on the internet following a debate over who owns the image. A photographer named David Slater was taking photos of monkey’s when one of them grabbed the camera and took a selfie of itself. Now this selfie has become famous with a number of people using the image without paying for it. They say that because the monkey took the photo no human owns the copyright. Normally professional photographers charge people for using snaps they've taken because they own something called a copyright. Therefore, he doesn't own them. As you can imagine Slater is very angry and wants the site to take the image down.Screenshot 2014-08-11 at 9.47.43 AM.png

No Hot Water For A Week

A lady named Fiona Mcdonald is a new mum. She lives in Albany, Auckland. Since the storm hit a week ago the power is up and running but her hot water is not. She’s been trying to contact the water company and every time she calls they say the water is on. When she checks the water it is still cold. She is packing to go to Australia to live with her mum and she says that she is going there because they have hot water and are not useless like New Zealand power companies.

Mexico Against Brazil

On Tuesday at 7:00am I got up to watch Mexico and Brazil play against each other. In the first half Brazil were playing really well. They were passing well and kicking for the goal. Every time they kicked the ball though it went the wrong direction or the Mexican goalkeeper blocked it. In the second half both teams were playing really hard and no no one was able to score a goal. It was a good game and the final score was 0-0.

Weenie House On Wheels!

Tom and Shaye Wilson live in a 15 square metre house and is on wheels. This house is known as a tiny house. This might sound unusual to other people but to Tom and Shaye it is not unusual. It is just the house they want. In the house the kitchen takes up most of the space. They still have places to sleep, cook, eat and live in the house. From start to finish the house cost $25.000 to build. They also said that last months power and water bills cost $20 each.

Netball Lesson

On Thursday was our first netball lesson. Dona was our coach from Auckland netball. First we did some warm ups to get us going. Then we got into our passing skills. We chose a  partner and started passing the ball to each other in different ways. After all the passing and throwing we had to go and line up in two groups. We were going to play a game of netball. When we began to play my team was leading. We had to stop because our time was up. It was really fun playing netball.

Playing At The AMI Netball Centre

Yesterday at the AMI netball centre there were lots of parents coming to see the children play in the interschool netball competition. Our first game was against St Pius and we won. We also won against Tamaki Primary and Glenbrae. We lost against Pt England and Glen Innes. The best part for me was actually playing on the court against the other schools. I think we did very well playing as a team yesterday and we ended up coming fourth.

Smart Decisions To Make Online

When we share online we will make smart decisions about what personal information we share
  • I will use my first name only
  • I am going to think carefully about what I share online and if I am not sure I will  ask my parents, teachers or principal.
  • If I can’t ask anyone or I am not sure I will  keep it private
  • I will be sharing what I am learning, new knowledge and information relevant to my learning

We have been learning to make smarter decisions on what we want to share online and what we want to keep private. For example we will use our first name only and we could choose to share our age but not our date of birth.

All About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Valarie and I am a student at Ruapotaka school. In my free time I like to read a book or play some kind of sport. My favourite subject at school is maths. My favourite sports team is the All Blacks. The sports I like to play the most are netball and soccer. What I am interested in is space and I want to learn more about it. My favourite movie is Joyful Noise. The person I look up to is my mum because she helps me with my homework and other things I need help with. The other person I also look up to is Valerie Adams because she helps motivate me when I am playing a sport. My goal for this year is to learn more keyboard shortcuts to help me with my work on the Chromebook. So that's mostly all about me.
